All Loads Subject to Hazardous Waste Load Checking
Hazardous and other prohibited materials, as defined under California law and regulations, may not be disposed at the Monterey Peninsula Landfill or the Materials Recovery Facility. If hazardous materials are found in loads, the hauler is responsible for all costs associated with management of the hazardous material. In addition, the District may notify state and local regulatory agencies, and the responsible party or parties may be subject to civil or criminal prosecution, or both.
Note: Classification of all materials is subject to scale house personnel’s discretion at time of acceptance.
REDUCE Your Load Through REUSE and RECYCLING
MRWMD offers the following facilities to make it convenient for you to reduce, reuse, recycle and properly dispose of your household hazardous materials before refuse is deposited in the landfill:
Last Chance Mercantile
Drop off your reusable such as clothing, furniture or leftovers from your garage sales.
Electronic Waste Recycling
It is against the law to dispose of electronic waste in the trash. Electronic waste is accepted free of charge for recycling at the Last Chance Mercantile donation tent.
Buy Back Center for CRV Beverage Containers
Recycle your “CRV” beverage containers for cash. Located behind the Last Chance Mercantile.
Recycling Drop Off
The recycling drop off area provides large bins for clean paper, cardboard, glass, metal (appliances must go across scales and to the MRF) and specific plastics. It is located on your way to the Last Chance Mercantile.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection
California law prohibits the disposal of household hazardous waste (HHW) in the trash. Residents within the District service area* may bring HHW for proper disposal to the HHW Collection Facility free of charge.
Small Business Hazardous Waste Collection
Hazardous and regulated waste from small businesses such as fluorescent light bulbs, paint, cleaning chemicals, etc. is accepted by appointment only. To schedule and for more information call (831) 384-5313.
