Special Event Collection

AD Project 2

Food Scrap Composting

The addition of food scraps to the MRWMD compost program began in October, 2008 and now diverts approximately 250 tons of food scraps per month from large commercial generators, restaurants, and special events.

The MRWMD food scrap compost program presently serves commercial customers including restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, and a range of special events such as sporting events, music festivals, and street fairs. If you are a commercial business and wish to start composting food scraps, please contact your waste and recycling service provider to discuss collection service.

What’s Accepted for the Food Scrap Compost Program

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe MRWMD food scrap compost program accepts clean loads of food material as well as compostable packaging (cups, plates, cutlery, bags) that has received the ASTM D6400, D6868 and/or Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) certification as “compostable”.

This certification verifies that a product will biodegrade completely, quickly and safely-just like yard trimmings and food scraps in a municipal compost program. For a list of products that carry this certification see: http://www.bpiworld.org/Certified-Bioedgradable-Foodservice-Items-Plates-Cups-Utinsels.

Special Event Compost Collection

If you wish to divert food scraps from a special event, it is important to assure that all event vendors use certified compostable products (above) and if bagged, certified compostable bags. If you will be delivering the material yourself (self hauling), bring a completed Food Scrap Compost Guide Lines Form to submit at the MRWMD scales upon delivery. You will then be directed to the food scrap compost receiving area to unload your material.

Collection Containers

Based upon availability, the District loans to local organizations (with MRWMD service area link to jurisdiction list), special event collection containers for compostables and recyclables. Complete a request form, and/or contact district staff for additional information on compost collection at your event.
