Computer and Television (electronic waste) Recycling
In
accordance with California State law, TVs and monitors
(electronic waste or e-waste) may not be disposed of in the
trash. The MRWMD accepts free of charge at the Last Chance
Mercantile: monitors, TVs, CPUs, cell phones, printers, fax and
copy machines. Limit 5 CRTs per vehicle.
The goal of this program is to keep toxic
material out of the Monterey Peninsula Landfill. Computer
monitors and TVs with CRTs contain 5-8 lbs of lead as well as
mercury, arsenic and other heavy metals and chemicals. Hazardous
materials collected are disposed of safely, and plastic glass
and metal components are recycled or reused. The Bay Area
recycler we send e-waste to has achieved a 98% recycling rate
for electronic items.
In 2007, the MRWMD collected 484,855 of
electronic waste compared to 233,280 lbs in 2006.
The
Last Chance Mercantile
is located at 14201 Del Monte Boulevard and accepts electronic
waste between 8:00 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8
a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. E-waste may be dropped off at
the rear of the building. If you have any reusable goods to
donate such as furniture, toys or sporting goods those items are
also accepted at the Last Chance Mercantile.
